Members of the graduating Class of 2016 are being offered a new program that emphasizes innovative, rigorous, compelling, and interdisciplinary work beyond the normal curriculum. Students who complete this program will propose, design, research and implement a senior thesis culminating in a TED Talk-style presentation and defense. In addition, they will perform community service and justice projects that move beyond thinking about service in terms of required hours and start developing skills for identifying problems and being leaders in initiatives that better serve the need sin the community.

The Certificate of Excellence will indicate that students who receive it have not only done supererogatory work and demonstrated extraordinary achievement in academic, the arts, and service but that they have also taken accountability for pushing the scope of their own interests and education in ways that reflect the best of creativity, scholarship, character, and leadership.

Moving forward the program will be extended into a two year experience culminating in a special diploma.

"THE LITTLE MERMAID" MARCH 16-20

HILTON HEAD IS., SC -- Hilton Head Preparatory School brings one of the most beloved Disney musicals ever to the stage with an enchanting production of Disney's "The Little Mermaid". Presented at the Hilton Head Preparatory School Main Street Theatre, Director Peggy Trecker White is excited to showcase her talented cast March 16-20, 2016.

In a magical kingdom beneath the sea, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. But first, she'll have to defy her father King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula, and convince the handsome Prince Eric that she's the girl whose enchanting voice he's been seeking. Based on the Academy Award-winning 1989 Disney film and one of Hans Christian Andersen's most beloved stories, Disney's THE LITTLE MERMAID is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages.

Disney's THE LITTLE MERMAID has a book by Doug Wright and a score that has Alan Menken and Howard Ashman's music from the original Disney film including "Part of Your World," "Poor Unfortunate Souls," "Kiss The Girl," and the Oscar winning "Under The Sea." There are also several brand new songs written for the stage by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater.

Hilton Head Preparatory School's production of Disney's THE LITTLE MERMAID will star Shannon Hagerty (Ariel), Ava Nixon (Ursula), Avery Campbell (Prince Eric), Keegan Crotty (Triton), Justin Stone (Sebastian), Kate Herman (Scuttle), Calvin Middleton (Flounder), Jackson Puckey (Grimsby), Jack Dextraze (Flotsam), Zach June (Jetsam), Jackson Richard (Chef Louis) and Caylin Campis, Kacy Jones, Rachel Stratton, Eve Farah, Hayden Garniewicz and Sophie Rudloff as the Mersisters. The rest of the ensemble is made up of over 40 students from our Lower, Middle and Upper Schools.

Presented at Hilton Head Preparatory School's own Main Street Theatre, this show is sure to delight an audience of all ages. The intimate atmosphere of the theatre will bring this magical world to life. "Audiences are captivated by the underwater feeling and the sheer beauty of the spectacle," says Director, Peggy Trecker White. "The universal appeal of the story helps young audiences connect with the characters. This is much more than a "kiddy" show, but rather an artistic collaboration that moves audiences beyond the Disney version and allows them to experience the story in a whole new way."

The creative team for Disney's THE LITTLE MERMAID is made up of Peggy Trecker White (Director), Patti Maurer (Choreographer), Evelyn McNair (Music Direction), Colleen Murray (Scenic Design), Pat Wilcox (Costume Design), Brian Riley (Lighting Design), Nick Turturro & Frank Milbourn (Sound Design), Kathryn Rosenberg (Assistant Director & Production Stage Manager) and Ali Wojcikiewicz (Assistant Stage Manager & Assistant Choreographer).

Performances are March 16 - 20, Wednesday - Saturday at 7:30 pm, matinees Saturday and Sunday at 2 pm. On February 3, 2016, Hilton Head Preparatory School senior, Jackson Richard, was named a Finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program and will be awarded with a certificate during the morning of Tuesday, February 16, at Hilton Head Preparatory School.

Jackson was named one of 16,000 Semifinalists in September of last year and had the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered this spring. Of the 1.5 million junior entrants in more than 22,000 high schools nationwide, the pool of Semifinalists represented less than one percent of the U.S. high school seniors. Only 15,000 juniors in the country have been selected as Finalists.

In order to become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and his or her high school had to submit a detailed scholarship application, in which information is provided about the Semifinalist's academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student's earlier performance on the qualifying test.

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2016 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 315,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.

Jackson was also recently accepted into Emory University where he was selected to be a finalist for the Emory Scholars Program. Jackson has been invited to attend Emory's Finalist Week, March 27-April 1, in order to learn about Emory first-hand and to learn more about the Scholars Program.

If chosen, Jackson could earn scholarship money and have the opportunity to join a community of scholars dedicated to succeeding academically, engaging in new challenges, and supporting each other's efforts to grow and to give. Emory Scholars seek to make positive impacts on the multiple communities of which they are a part, both while at Emory as well as after graduation.
