Alumna Emily Blackshire '12 Makes the Most of Her Gap Year

When Hilton Head Prep alumna Emily Blackshire made the decision to take a “gap year” after graduation in May 2012, she planned to make it the most rewarding, thought-provoking one of her life. With that in mind, her humanitarian interests took her to Uganda for four months to work with Light Gives Heat, a Colorado-based non-profit organization that empowers Africans through the encouragement of economic sustainability and creative endeavors.

Motivating people to "be the change they want to see in the world," Light Gives Heat partners with local artisans to generate consistent incomes in impoverished areas.  With the help of American volunteers such as Blackshire, the local artisans in her village created beautiful handmade necklaces and tailor-made bags to sell online under the brand names Suubi (meaning “hope”) and Epoh (“hope” spelled backwards).

Inspired by Blackshire’s efforts in Africa, Hilton Head Prep senior Katie Diaz mobilized the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to raise funds in support of her mission.  Diaz was instrumental in spearheading the effort, which raised more than $1,000.  When Blackshire learned what an honor it was for villagers to have photographs hanging in their homes, she used the money raised by FCA to have professional quality photos taken and printed for the families. She also gave Christmas bonuses to the bead and bag making employees.

Although there were many life-affirming moments, Blackshire’s favorite part of her experience in Africa was the unique perspective it gave her by seeing how people in other parts of the world live. The experience also made her very aware of how she spends her time. She was keenly aware that people in her village used their time and energy productively and rarely spent time on unimportant endeavors.

Within weeks of her return from Uganda, Blackshire received word that she’d been accepted into the internship program at Ashoka – Innovators for the Public, a Washington, DC-based non-profit.  Ashoka identifies leading social entrepreneurs around the world who develop innovative solutions to social problems.  Ashoka “fellows” work in over 70 countries around the globe in every area of human need.

Blackshire will spend the next three months interning with Ashoka, working with the division that searches for fellows around the world, specifically those pursuing human rights, economic sustainability, and education related interests in Sub-Saharan Africa. Currently, they host more than 3,000 fellows with innovations in everything from the environment and job creation to gender and race relations.

This fall, Blackshire will enter Clemson University to continue pursuing her dream of working in foreign policy and aid specifically in the realms of job creation and education.  She certainly doesn’t need to worry she hasn’t used her time productively.

Hilton Head Preparatory School is honored and excited to be hosting the first ever Hilton Head Island walk to support JDRF.  Hilton Head Prep has had several families over the years who have been touched by type 1 diabetes, and we are happy to help in the fight for a cure. One of the core values here at Hilton Head Prep is “School Family” and we take that seriously in supporting causes where our school family has been affected. Many of our students will be volunteers on that day and we hope many of our community members will be participating. On behalf of the Faculty, Staff, Students, and Trustees, I welcome all participants to our campus on Sunday, April 28, 2013 and wish JDRF much success in their efforts.

Held each spring, the Lower School musical showcases the best of what Hilton Head Prep has to offer. Our talented students, dedicated faculty and supportive parents work together for weeks on end to design costumes and sets, choreograph musical numbers, learn songs and speaking parts, (and of course, practice, practice, practice!) to put on two amazing performances which delighted friends, family and others in the community. This year's production of 101 Dalmations involved all students in grades JK-5, with fifth graders performing the speaking roles. The entire Hilton Head Prep community thanks Jim Fritz and Pam Martin for their efforts in putting on such a high-quality performance.

HILTON HEAD, SC, Wednesday, May 8, 2013 -- Hilton Head Prep students added a little country western flair to this year's Spring Strings and Orchestra concert. Decked out in bandanas and boots, students were joined on stage by popular southern blues rock band, Cranford & Sons. One of the founding members of Cranford & Sons is fiddle player Eric Reid, a Hilton Head Prep alumnus who graduated in 2006. Reid was an orchestra student in high school whose strings teacher, Cathy Klimoff, never forgot her former pupil.  After bumping into Reid last year and hearing his band perform, Mrs. Klimoff invited the band to perform with her students. Reid and the rest of band enthusiastically agreed.  Students and parents alike were thrilled with the entire performance which also included a few musical numbers by the band.

This is not the first time a famous alumnus has agreed to perform with Hilton Head Prep students. Some years ago, Grammy nominated singer-songwriter and alumnus Duncan Sheik, known most notably for his 1996 debut single "Barely Breathing", performed a benefit concert with upper school strings students.

With the increasingly number of reports on the tragic consequences of bullying, Hilton Head Prep hosted an important seminar, "Skillfully Parenting the Cyber-Generation" for parents and students in October. The event was open to the public and was well-attended by parents all around the community. School Counselor Marilyn Calore started the evening with a discussion on the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, a comprehensive approach to creating a safe and positive school climate, which Hilton Head Prep implemented in 2012.

Following Mrs. Calore's presentation was nationally renowned guest speaker Katie Koestner who spoke with parents about social media, cyber-bullying, cell phones and parenting skills for technology. The following morning, middle and upper school students participated in separate seminars. Her "Just a Joke” seminar for middle school students addressed bullying, cyberbullying, diversity and multiculturalism and her program for upper school students, “Building Your Digital Dossier,” covered bullying, cyberbullying, digital citizenship and social media. The important two-day event was well received by parents and students alike.

Mrs. Calore was interviewed by WTOC-TV about Hilton Head Prep's anti-bullying program. Click below to see the interview.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hilton Head Preparatory School Announces New Headmaster

The Hilton Head Preparatory School Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Jon Hopman as Hilton Head Prep's next headmaster, beginning July 1, 2014.  The Headmaster Search Committee unanimously recommended Mr. Hopman's candidacy after a lengthy search citing his breadth of experience, character and reputation, and leadership qualities as ideally suited to leading Hilton Head Prep in the years ahead.

During three visits to the Hilton Head Prep campus, Mr. Hopman had the opportunity to meet with the administration and faculty, more than 50 parents and students, and the entire board of trustees.

“The Search Committee actively sought someone who could provide strong leadership in growing our enrollment, addressing the needs of our aging facilities, managing our finances, and contributing to our marketing and development efforts while continuing our strong focus on academic rigor and leading edge curriculum development,” said Steve Marbut, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. “Jon’s proven track record has touched on all of these key areas. We are excited about the future for Hilton Head Prep under Jon’s leadership and we welcome him to our vibrant community.”

Mr. Hopman comes to Hilton Head Prep from Montverde Academy, in Montverde, Florida, a suburb of Orlando, where he served in various capacities for 13 years. First serving as director of development, business manager and director of admissions, Mr. Hopman served most recently as the assistant headmaster since 2009. During his tenure with the school, Montverde experienced substantial growth with enrollment, surging from 250 students in 2001 to over 1,000 students today. This growth entailed expansion of the school’s facilities, all of which Mr. Hopman helped to oversee. He also led the strategic planning for capital projects and financial management as well as for the recruitment of domestic and international students. He has also been involved with curriculum alignment across divisions and accreditation processes with three different agencies. Mr. Hopman has a B.A. in Business Management from George Mason University and an M.A. in Educational Leadership from Stetson University.

“During my recent visits to Hilton Head Prep, I was most impressed that everyone I met with presented themselves as ambassadors with a true love and pride for the school,” said incoming Headmaster Jon Hopman. “I am truly honored to bring my family into the Prep family and serve to the best of my ability.”

Mr. Hopman will be replacing Headmaster Peter Cooper who served as interim headmaster for the 2008-2009 school year and returned as headmaster in 2012. Mr. Cooper will remain as headmaster through the remainder of this academic year.

“I am delighted that Hilton Head Prep was able to attract a candidate of Jon’s caliber and I look forward to working with him during the coming months to ensure a seamless transition to our school,” said Headmaster Peter Cooper.

Mr. Hopman will be joined by his wife, Mindy, who is also an experienced educator and their two children, Hunter, a rising eighth grader and Haylee, a rising fifth grader.

On Stage: 'Midsummer Night's Dream' at Hilton Head Prep

Published: The Island Packet, November 7, 2013  2013-11-07T16:30:05Z

The cast of Hilton Head Preparatory School's production of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream"

Director: Peggy Trecker White

Lead actors: Students from Hilton Head Preparatory School from ages 4 through 18, including Marisa Wojcikiewicz, Megan Frederick, Jared Woodson, John Sheehan, Allie Santorum, Jackson Puckey, Kate Herman and Ava Nixon.

The plot: "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is William Shakespeare's most popular comedy. It portrays the adventures of four young lovers and a group of amateur actors, their interactions with woodland fairies and a duke and duchess who are about to get married. Taking place in a mythical Athens and an enchanted forest, there is the handsome fairy king, a misguided parent, star-crossed lovers, a weaver who's transformed into a half-donkey, woodland sprites and mischievous elves. This work is widely performed around the world, and no wonder -- it's about the world's most popular pastime, falling in love. But as prank-loving Puck knows, falling in love can make fools of us all. Love is crazy, love is mad. Will love win out in the end?

The story behind the show: Performing "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at Prep used to be a tradition, and we thought it would be a great idea to bring that tradition back. It is also a wonderful show to introduce students to Shakespeare as it is highly physical and full of comedy. Performing in the school's beautiful courtyard allows us to be in the magical woods to which the lovers escape. We are surrounded by trees and stars, and thus become part of their story. Theater can happen anywhere.

Director's take: I think the coolest thing about this production is watching the students tackle Shakespeare with such ease. Once they let go of the idea that the characters or the language was far removed from themselves, they jumped in with great enthusiasm. Watching them make these characters their own and come alive has been highly entertaining and satisfying. I am a huge fan of musical theater and look forward to our upcoming production of "Godspell," but it is also incredibly important to me that these students gain experience in all styles of theater. And, even more importantly, it gives those creative kids who don't sing a chance to spread their wings.

Behind the scenes: Because we are performing outside in the courtyard, we've been able to run around and really get used to the space from the get-go. Usually there are students or teachers who aren't involved with the show walking through the courtyard from one activity to the other. The best -- and this happens with every rehearsal -- is when those people stop what they're doing and watch the action. We are getting the whole Prep community involved, and it's really exciting.

Run dates: 7 p.m. Nov. 9-10

Ticket prices: Adults $15, Seniors and students $10
