Nicaragua 2015!
Hilton Head Preparatory School – Nicaragua - March 20, 2015
This month, sixteen students and two teachers from Hilton Head Preparatory School traveled to the rural community of Campuzano, located outside of Managua, Nicaragua. The students took part in building projects, completing construction on two homes for families that had lost their homes to devastating poverty and earthquakes in recent years. With limited access to building supplies and resources to build homes of concrete and steel, Bridges to Community, and non-profit organization based in Ossining, NY has facilitated student trips to Nicaragua for the past 20 years. This is the third year that Hilton Head Prep students have participated in the trip, having seen five different Nicaraguan families receive a home that otherwise would have been out of their reach.
Amidst sweat, dust, and heat, these sixteen students learned the value of community engagement, team work, and most importantly, building bridges between cultures and changing lives through service and friendship. Says one participant of the experience, Whitaker Gannon, "I have been thinking about myself, my college major, my career my whole life; now I realize that it is more than that, that life really does exist like this and I now need to do something to make a difference". Spending a week in Nicaragua not only expands student's cultural knowledge but also allows them to see how 80% of the world lives, how truly fortunate we are, and how injustice and corruption are the realities of the human experience. What they do with this knowledge will determine the strength of our future relationship with countries like Nicaragua and how awareness and compassion can truly affect impoverished communities around the world. For more information on the ongoing project and Nicaragua or to find out about how to be involved with the Bridges to Community organization, please visit www.bridgestocommunity.org.
